What is AFSCME Local 3299?

Local 3299 is the Union representing over 17,000 University of California workers. The union represents workers from all facilities that employ UC workers across the state of California, including its ten campuses, five medical centers, and agricultural and marine research institutions.

What do the letters stand for?

AFSCME represents a huge union, composed of almost 1.5 million members nation-wide. This union is called the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.

A brief history of AFSCME:

In 1932, public workers in Wisconsin who recognized that their human and civil rights were not being represented decided to form the AFSCME union. These workers organized at small meetings and held strikes, rallies, marches and sit-ins to demand that the rights of working people be heard.
