Russell Athletics

On January 30, 2009, Russell Athletics committed the most unconceivable worker's rights violations in its Honduran factories. In response to worker's advocating for their basic rights, Russell closed down its only unionized factory in Honduras leaving 1800 workers unemployed and banned from any other work within the country. Two workers from the union, Jerzees de Honduras, left for the US after the factory closed, to visit universities across the US to cut contracts with Russell Athletics.

The two workers, Norma and Mirna, from Jerzees de Honduras, visited UCSD for an open forum to educate all of us about the issues and allowed UCSD to mobilize on a Russell-free campaign targeting the UCSD bookstore, a mass producer of Russell Athletics sweatshirts and sweatpants.

After a brief meeting with the director of the UCSD bookstore, John Turk, in which he stated that the contract with Russell "would not be renewed" we succeeded in cutting Russell Athletics from our campus!

Living Wage

UC Service Workers were making 33% below market wage and were paid significantly less than workers at CSU's and Community Colleges. Actions were held at the following locations over a 6-month campaign:
  • June 4th, 2009
  • August 22, 2009
  • November 25, 2009
  • January 21, 2010
In February, UC Service workers eventually reached an historic agreement with UC as it agrees to the major demands, fundamentally changing UC to improve the lives of thousands of the lowest paid workers at the University.
